In 1960, Doug Angel was a member of Navy fl ight crew stationed at Johnsville, Pa. when a friend asked him if he wanted to skydive. He had spent his last few years fl ying off of aircraft carriers in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and the North Atlantic Seas logging more than 250 missions with a heavy attack squadron armed with nuclear weapons during the Cold War. Doug accepted the challenge and climbed onto the step of a small Cessna, twenty fi ve hundred feet over Valley Forge Pennsylvania, and began a career in the then primitive sport of skydiving that would span more than fifty years. During that time he made more than fi ve thousand jumps while logging twenty four hours in freefall. An instructor and jumpmaster, Doug personally trained over 20,000 fi rst time jumpers including future astronauts, John Kennedy, Jr. and Christie Brinkley. He lives in New Jersey and performs demonstration jumps with this team, The Fallin’ Angels.

For those who want to know what skydiving was really like in the early days prior to square parachutes and mandatory AADs, this is a great read. Those who lived during this time will relish the memories. Those who knew or worked for Doug Angel can vouch for the authenticity of the stories and characters. Doug is a skydving pioneer who doesn't get even close to the credit he deserves for his efforts in developing the modern and safe skydiving communities we have now. A must read for all skydivers past and present.

ORANGE Doug Angel 9781481703147 Books Reviews

I can think of no better way to whet your whistle for adventure...this book is going to be the impetus for every imagination to conjure some way to top the apex of antics described. Sky is the limit! Make way for an Angel! ~Wahoo!
I started skydiving at Parachutes, Incorporated in April 1967; the guys that worked, jumped, and partied there were mythic to me -- guys like Mike Horan, Chuck Embry, Sonny Dickey, Nate Pond, Lew Sanborn, Butch Rubb, Tom McCarthy and others. I bought Doug Angel's book without hesitation because I thought that it would chronicle those days -- unfortunately, it was a disappointment. This book is a drab one-dimensional description of colorful days and people.
A real, funny, and intelligent depiction of an adventurous life in early days of the sport of skydiving. Also entertaining
tales of miscreants, and charming people. Some interesting name dropping as well. The adventures were breathtaking, the human factor is heartfelt. A fun and rolicking
read.
Knowing a few of these characters in real life made the stories so much better! I couldn't put the book down and read it in one evening. Had to pick it up again and read it all over and enjoyed it even more on the second read! Doug is a colorful person who, by his many real life stories, is living life the way it's supposed to be.
One of the best parts is about Doug, Skip and Jim McGowan!!!
Thanks for putting your life and stories down on paper for the rest of us to enjoy!
Joe
Even if you've never had the desire to jump out of a perfectly good airplane, this is a humorous look at the good old days of the sport. If you do skydive, you might recognize some of the characters even though he only uses first names.
I lived through most of that stuff and knew Doug. It is very accurate.
